Dr. Vikas Mahatme epitomizes the spirit of transformative service and unwavering dedication. Born on December 11, 1957, in Amravati, Maharashtra, his roots in Nagpur have cultivated a profound commitment to improving society. Dr. Mahatme is revered across Maharashtra for his selfless contributions as an ophthalmologist, a social entrepreneur, and a visionary leader.

His journey is one of compassion and empowerment. Driven by an innate desire to bring light into the lives of others, he founded the S. Mahatme Eye Welfare Charitable Trust. The Mahatme Eye Bank eye hospital was established in Nagpur and across Mumbai, Amravati, Gadchiroli, and Pune through this noble initiative.

 His efforts in providing accessible eye care services have touched countless lives, earning him the prestigious Padma Shri for his unparalleled community work. In the realm of politics, Dr. Mahatme’s passion for societal change became even more evident. His relentless advocacy for the Dhangar community, reflected in his support for Scheduled Tribe reservation in Maharashtra, broke barriers and paved the way for inclusivity in governance. His remarkable journey took a monumental step in June 2016 when he was elected unopposed as a member of the Rajya Sabha. In the realm of politics, Dr. Mahatme’s passion for societal change became even more evident. His relentless advocacy for the Dhangar community, reflected in his support for Scheduled Tribe reservation in Maharashtra, broke barriers and paved the way for inclusivity in governance. His remarkable journey took a monumental step in June 2016 when he was elected unopposed as a member of the Rajya Sabha.

Public Access To Medical Facilities

Dr. Vikas Mahatme is a beacon of empathy and dedication, spearheading transformative initiatives that bring healthcare to the doorstep of those in need. His pioneering efforts in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra reflect his visionary leadership, being the first to establish an eye bank and foster an eye donation movement. Driven by a relentless commitment to accessible healthcare, he has established multiple eye hospitals and vision centers in critical regions across Central India, including Nagpur, Amravati, Gadchiroli, and Mumbai.

Health    Awareness Campaigns

Since 1986, Dr. Mahatme has been actively engaged in community outreach programs, traversing rural, tribal, and slum areas to conduct vital eye screening camps. His proactive approach extended further, setting up hospitals and mobile eye units in various locations, including Melghat, Yavatmal, Gondia, and Chandrapur, ensuring comprehensive eye care reaches even the most remote rural corners. A catalyst for health awareness, he energizes society through TV shows, newspaper articles, public forums, and impactful roadshows. Dr Mahatme initiated the ‘Right to Health Movement,’ championing awareness about health rights and various government health schemes available to the common person. 

Social And Emotional Awareness Initiatives

Beyond healthcare, Dr. Mahatme champions social and emotional well-being, believing in the holistic development of individuals. His narrative presentation, “Happy Meaningful Life,” has captivated audiences across India and abroad, emphasizing the balance between physical, social, emotional, and academic facets of education. Establishing the ‘Institute of Science of Happiness,’ he nurtures thinking skills among the youth, empowering them with ten life skills endorsed by the World Health Organization. Regular personality development programs for N.C.C. and other students underscore his commitment to shaping well-rounded individuals.

Upliftment Of Dhangar Community​

As an eminent leader of the Dhangar community, Dr. Mahatme relentlessly addresses their issues in Maharashtra. His leadership culminated in momentous marches and conventions, advocating for Scheduled Tribe reservations. His unique ability to unite the Dhangar community significantly influenced government politics, fostering positive change at both central and state levels. As the former president of the Dhangar Samaj Sangharsh Samiti, Maharashtra Rajya continues the unwavering quest for reservation rights in government offices and educational institutions.
